Over time all types of drapes absorb dust, dirt and foul odours. Here we’ve gathered some tricks and tips for easy curtain cleaning. It is best to include this chore to your weekly home cleaning routine. Vacuum your curtains using soft brush nozzle to remove dust, hair and dirt. It takes no more than 15 minutes. As other fast cleanups it’s a fast way to make your place look nice and tidy without much effort.

Steam Cleaning for Heavy Curtains

Hand or machine washing heavy curtains is a bad idea because the drying process will be too long and the fabric can stretch. Materials like velvet or chenille can be cleaned most easily with steam cleaner. This is also a good option for drapes that are hard to take down from the rails. The most important thing when you steam clean your curtains is to clean from the top to the lower end. Use the upholstery attachment for best results. If you notice the fabric is getting wet hold the cleaner further away from the drape.

Machine-Wash for Lightweight Curtains

If the fabric allows it this is one of the easiest ways to deep clean your curtains. Machine-wash is suitable for lightweight fabrics or materials that don’t retain too much water. Use normal laundry detergent and set up the delicate cycle. You can also try our green suggestion for cleaning detergent. Always check the label of your curtains before putting them in the laundry. Always wash your curtains separately from other textile items.

Hand Wash for Delicate Curtains

If you have any doubts the fabric is too delicate and it can shrink or colour-bleed don’t risk and wash your curtains by hand. Materials like 100% cotton, lace, voile or chiffon should always be hand washed. For delicate fabrics you can use your regular laundry detergent or laundry soap for delicate fabrics. Follow strictly the instructions on the package and use lukewarm water to prevent any damage.

Drying Process

No matter how wet are the curtains after the cleaning you have to resist the temptation to put them into the dryer. This can cause stubborn folds and creases and even hot ironing wouldn’t be able to remove them. The best method to dry your drapes is to hang them outside, or to put them back on the rail and run a fan, leaving the windows wide open. Letting drapes hanging down will allow them to dry naturally and creases and folds to “fall out”. If you prefer you can even iron the curtains quickly after they dry to achieve tidy, as-new look.

Make Curtain Cleaning Easier

Curtain cleaning is easy, especially if you include their maintenance to your regular chores. Reduce the absorption of unpleasant smells. Keep kitchen door closed when cooking and ventilate room regularly, even more – if you are a smoker. Vacuum your drapes on weekly bases to reduce the amount of dust they absorb. Hiring professional curtain cleaners once or twice a year is also a good option to keep your drapes in good shape and prolong their life.
